Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon, who was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), is scheduled to be produced before the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court today (21).

CID officers took the former police chief into custody at his residence yesterday (20), in connection with investigations into the violent attack on the ‘Aragalaya’ protest site at Galle Face Green on 9 May 2022.

Earlier on the same day, the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court rejected an anticipatory bail application filed on Deshabandu Tennakoon’s behalf, which sought to prevent his arrest.

The application, submitted by his legal team, was taken up before Colombo Fort Magistrate Nilupuli Lankapura, who dismissed the request, clearing the way for the CID to proceed with the arrest.
