Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe was arrested this afternoon (22) after providing a statement to the CID regarding an ongoing investigation.

Wickremesinghe had arrived at the FCID earlier in the day in response to a summons to record his statement. The investigation centres on his visit to London during his presidency to attend the graduation ceremony of his wife, Professor Maithree Wickramasinghe.

Previously, the FCID had also summoned former President’s Secretary Saman Ekanayake and Wickremesinghe’s private secretary to record statements over the same matter.

Further details on the charges and the next steps in legal proceedings are expected to be presented before court.
