Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa said the government must not prepare to resort to further suppression, warning that they (the Opposition) too has a limit to their patience.
He expressed these views yesterday (23) while attending the Gamin Gamata (village to village) programme in Aluthgama.
Rajapaksa accused the government of attempting to cover up current allegations by carrying out politically motivated arrests.
“Arresting a state leader will not solve the country’s problems,” he said, adding that leaders of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) have neither a generation to protect nor a country to safeguard.
He further stated:
“We are a political force that has always loved this country, a political force that placed its foot firmly on the soil, and a political force that has worked for the nation. Of course, our governments may have had shortcomings, but today from Dondra Head to Point Pedro, the younger generation seeks a new political culture. This is not about revenge. We face a challenge: state terrorism is being implemented to undermine democracy. This means actions are being taken by a regime that violates the constitution. We are ready to face that challenge. But we say to the government—do not move towards suppression. There is a limit to patience.”
