Former Member of Parliament Athuraliye Rathana Thera has been remanded until 12 September by the Nugegoda Magistrate’s Court, a short while ago.

Rathana appeared before the Nugegoda Magistrate’s Court this morning (29).

A warrant for his arrest had been issued on 18 August by the Nugegoda Magistrate’s Court. However, he was evading the arrest until today.

The case relates to the alleged abduction of Ape Janabala Party General Secretary Ven. Wedinigama Wimalatissa Thera in 2020, in order to intimidate him and secure the party’s National List parliamentary seat.

According to CCD reports, officers had visited Rathana Thera’s residence, Sandaham Sevana in Rajagiriya, on the night of 7 August to arrest him, but he was not present and his mobile phone had been switched off.
