The United National Party (UNP) has decided to invite leaders of all opposition political parties to its annual convention, scheduled for 6 September.

A preparatory meeting for the event was held yesterday (31), where the proposal to extend invitations to opposition leaders was discussed. The proposal is expected to be submitted to the UNP Working Committee on 3 September for approval.

The party has also decided to lift the suspension imposed on former members, treating them instead as individuals who have left the party. This move too will be placed before the Working Committee for endorsement.

In the days ahead, former President Ranil Wickremesinghe is expected to personally extend invitations to opposition leaders. To encourage broader participation, the convention will not be held at the UNP headquarters in Sirikotha but at a neutral venue.
