NPP Colombo District MP Lakmali Hemachandra has stated that there is no provision in the law to withdraw the security of former Presidents, rejecting claims circulating on social media.

“Many false claims are being spread regarding this process. It is being said that we are removing the security of former Presidents. But there is no such clause in this law. Why speak about removing their security at all?” she said.

Hemachandra criticised what she described as fearmongering, saying, “Some are trying to say that if President Anura removes the underworld, we will just stand by and watch. Our democracy is protected because we now have a government that respects democracy. If we want to safeguard democracy, rulers must change, and they must recognise equality.”

She pointed out that former Presidents Mahinda Rajapaksa and Maithripala Sirisena continue to live in luxury residences built by combining two houses. “Why can’t we speak about this injustice?” she questioned.

The MP further said the opposition no longer needs additional security and emphasised that the government is focused on the security of the people.
