The Supreme Court today (11) granted leave to proceed with a petition filed against SLPP MP Namal Rajapaksa’s unpaid electricity bill of over Rs 2 million for his 2019 wedding.

The decision was delivered by Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena and Justice Achala Wengappuli.

Petitioners’ attorneys told the Court that electricity had been used to illuminate a 1.5 km route to a private residence for the wedding, following a request by D.V. Chanaka and instructions from then Minister of Power Ravi Karunanayake. They also claimed that after the case was filed, it was revealed that payments had been made by an unrelated third party, Royalco Aqua Culture (Pvt) Ltd, raising allegations of abuse of power and corruption.

The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) stated that it acted on received instructions. Meanwhile, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s legal representative President’s Counsel Palitha Kumarasinghe, said that Rajapaksa did not receive such a bill and that the electricity costs had been settled by a third party.

The case has been scheduled for hearing on 17 March 2026.

The petition was filed by Attorney Vijitha Kumara, with Attorneys Dinithi Prasadini and Thishya Weragoda representing the petitioner under instructions from Attorney Thamila Perera. Attorney Pasindu Silva appeared for the CEB, while Deputy Solicitor General Yuresha de Silva represented the Attorney General and the Auditor General.
