Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa stated that a politician who is not emotionally connected to the people can never truly be a people’s leader.
In a post on his official Facebook page, Rajapaksa expressed his gratitude to the Maha Sangha who have continuously offered blessings to him from the day he returned to Carlton House to the present.
He further said he takes humble pride in being a leader centred on the people’s power, without distinction of race or religion, and in remaining close to the people throughout his life.
“I have spent most of my life among the people. That remains true even today. A term of office may come to an end, but the love of the people lasts beyond any term. It never ends. The people have stood with me, both when I held power and when I did not.
Friendships and bonds formed in the village are familiar to us. The conversations of small children bring me joy. Because they do not see me as a former president, their conversations are all the more delightful — and that is why I enjoy them.
A politician who is not emotionally connected to the citizens can never be a true leader of the people.
From the day I came to Carlton House until this very moment, I offer my respectful gratitude to the Maha Sangha who have come to bless me. I also extend my thanks to the beloved people, fellow politicians, and professionals who have visited me to share their concerns and well wishes.
I am humbly proud to be a leader rooted in the power of the people, to be your neighbour, and to be someone close to you, regardless of race or religion.”
