Agriculture, Livestock, Lands, and Irrigation Minister K.D. Lal Kantha says that certain government-affiliated Members of Parliament are behaving as if they are still in the opposition.

Speaking to the media after attending a ceremony, minister Lal Kantha stressed that if MPs wanted to act as though they were in the opposition, there would be no need for a government.

“If we want to do what we did while in the opposition, then we don’t need a government. At times, some MPs who are with the government act like they are in the opposition. But now we are in government. This is a time for governance, not opposition politics. Opposition-style programmes cannot be carried out while governing,” he said.

Commenting on the ongoing political discourse, the minister noted that a question has now arisen as to whether the executive presidency should continue. He emphasised that, as promised earlier, discussions on abolishing the executive presidency must be taken forward.

“As we pledged, we must move ahead with the discussion on whether our country really needs an executive presidency. From a democratic standpoint, it is important. Our country had been under an undemocratic system. We must steer democracy in a positive direction, and the people will support that – even if some might be displeased. There is no other choice,” Lal Kantha said.
