A heated exchange took place in Parliament today (23) between Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa and Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne.
Premadasa called for the tabling of all documents — including the Secretary-General’s report and the Attorney General’s report — that led to the rejection of the no-confidence motion against Deputy Minister of Defence Aruna Jayasekara.
When the Speaker responded that the discussion on the no-confidence motion would be taken up at a later date and a detailed report would be presented tomorrow, Premadasa requested a minute to make his case. The Speaker, however, reiterated that the discussion would be scheduled later and invited Samagi Jana Balawegaya MPs to meet him afterwards to discuss the matter further.
During the session, the Opposition Leader also criticised the government for failing to deliver justice for victims of the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks. He noted that a father of a victim had participated virtually in the Geneva discussions, where he stated that the investigations conducted in Sri Lanka had not provided justice.
Premadasa stressed that such situations were harmful to the country’s reputation and insisted that justice must be served to the victims and their families.
