National People’s Power (NPP) MP Jagath Wickramaratne was appointed as the Speaker of Parliament unanimously. His name was proposed by Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya and seconded by Leader of the House Bimal Rathnayake.

The Opposition did not propose any name for the post, despite the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) earlier stating they would nominate an opposition member.
