Another suspect linked to the massive narcotics haul uncovered from three lorries in Seenimodara, Tangalle, has been arrested by the Tangalle Divisional Crime Investigation Unit.
Police confirmed that the suspect, identified as ‘Beliatta Sanaa’, was taken into custody yesterday (1 October).
The bust, which took place recently, led to the seizure of over 700 kilograms of heroin and crystal methamphetamine (‘Ice’), smuggled into Sri Lanka and being readied for distribution. Investigations have revealed that the consignment is tied to an overseas drug trafficker known as ‘Unakuruwa Shantha’.
Police said that ‘Beliatta Sanaa’ is a close associate of ‘Bhoomithelā’, a key suspect in the operation. A special operation has been launched to track down other individuals connected to the drug syndicate.
In addition, investigators discovered another house in Marakolliya, Tangalle, which was allegedly used by the network to conceal narcotics.
Meanwhile, Deputy Minister Mahinda Jayasinghe, speaking at an event at the Hatton Labour District Office, stressed that the government would deal swiftly and decisively with drug trafficking and related crimes across the country.
