Retired Colonel Neville Wanniarachchi was remanded until 17 October after the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) told Colombo Magistrate’s Court yesterday (2) that he had amassed more than Rs. 28 million in unexplained income between 1 January 2013 and 24 January 2014.

CIABOC told the court investigators had uncovered a portfolio of properties and businesses, including a 3.7-acre petrol filling station in Walasmulla, a Pallekele house built at Rs. 4.5 million, a Nawinna (Maharagama) house worth Rs. 12.5 million, a Dematagoda house worth Rs. 10.5 million, a hotel under construction on 45.5 perches in Tissamaharama, a Madiwela (Kotte) land valued at Rs. 40 million, and two rented shops in Beliatta and Weeraketiya.

Prosecutors told the court Wanniarachchi repeatedly failed to submit full assets declarations, obstructed inquiries and supplied incomplete or false information to investigators; the magistrate ordered CIABOC to file a detailed report on the properties at the next hearing.
