In celebration of its 14th anniversary and in honour of World Children’s Day, the Prefects’ Guild of Leeds International School Matugama carried out a compassionate Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) project that touched many hearts and highlighted the power of empathy in education.

The project was dedicated to supporting students of the Mayura Special Needs School, which provides education for children diagnosed with Down syndrome. Spearheaded by senior prefects Gehansa Jayasekara and Sudeesh Rajapakse, and guided by Prefects’ Guild Teacher-in-Charge Nilmini Rukshanthi, the initiative demonstrated exceptional teamwork and commitment.

To fund the project, the prefects organised a series of creative fundraising activities, including a popular Hot Dog Stand during the Inter-Leeds Chess Tournament. The funds raised were used to provide a wholesome lunch and essential stationery for the Mayura students.

The initiative not only brought joy and smiles to the children at Mayura but also inspired Leeds students to embrace values of compassion, service, and social awareness. Parents, teachers, and students who took part witnessed the genuine happiness that comes from giving back to the community.

Expressing her pride, Principal Gayana Jayasundara said,
“Our Prefects’ Guild has exemplified leadership with heart. This initiative reflects the ethos of Leeds International School Matugama, where academic excellence goes hand in hand with social responsibility.”

The event concluded with interactive games and activities shared between Leeds prefects and the Mayura students, creating lasting memories and reaffirming a simple truth — that even small acts of kindness can make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
