Former parliamentarian Sajin Vass Gunawardena appeared before the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) this morning (8) following a summons in connection with the ongoing probe into the 2019 Easter Sunday terror attacks.

Police confirmed that Gunawardena was called to provide a statement regarding telephone calls allegedly linked to prior warnings of the attacks.

The development comes after former President Maithripala Sirisena testified that he had received warnings from an Indian intelligence service about the impending attacks. During the investigation of the relevant phone numbers, authorities say evidence emerged indicating that the calls may have originated from Gunawardena.

CID officers are currently recording his statement in connection with these findings.

The Easter Sunday bombings, which targeted churches and hotels, remain one of the deadliest terror incidents in Sri Lanka’s history, with investigations ongoing to establish accountability and examine prior intelligence failures.
