Parliament is scheduled to hold an adjournment debate tomorrow (10) on the opposition’s motion calling for “Parliamentary Intervention to Ensure the Independence of the National Police Commission.” The debate will take place from 3.30 p.m. to 5.30 p.m.
The motion was submitted in writing to Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne yesterday (8) by Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP and Attorney-at-Law Sujeewa Senasinghe, under Standing Order 19(2) of Parliament, as a matter of urgent public importance.
Following the submission, Chief Opposition Whip Gayantha Karunathilaka informed the House of the motion, after which no fewer than 20 MPs stood in support of it, fulfilling the requirements under Standing Order 19(2). The Speaker subsequently granted approval for the debate.
Both the government and opposition have agreed to debate seven of the eight private member motions scheduled for tomorrow from 11.30 a.m. to 3.30 p.m., after which the adjournment debate on the National Police Commission will be taken up.
