The Sri Lanka Navy has recovered 51 parcels containing a total of 839 kilograms of illegal drugs floating in the sea off the southern coast, the Navy confirmed.
Navy Media Spokesperson Commander Buddhika Sampath told BBC Sinhala that the haul, discovered on October 14, included approximately 670 kg of ice (crystal meth), 156 kg of heroin, and 12 kg of hashish. The parcels were found during patrol operations in the southern maritime area.
“The Navy conducts continuous search operations, so we believe these drugs were likely discarded at sea. The seized substances have been handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau. We are also investigating the vessels that transported them,” he added.
According to Police Spokesperson ASP F.U. Wootler, the seizure is the result of a 31-day coordinated operation in the southern seas. He explained that the drugs were brought in on two fishing boats and that the Police Narcotics Destruction Unit will carry out further investigations.
