MP Ajith P. Perera has alleged that the Speaker obtained two additional official residences at a luxury apartment complex on Lorens Road, Colombo, despite already having an official residence at Rajamalwatta, for a reported payment of approximately Rs. 8,252.
He made these remarks while participating in the adjournment debate held in Parliament today (November 3).
According to the MP, the two apartments, identified as 1/8 and 3/4, were allocated to the Speaker and his secretary respectively.
The MP presiding over the session pointed out that Standing Orders restrict discussions on matters currently before the courts.
Responding to this, Perera stated that no court case had been filed against the Speaker regarding either residence. However, he said the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) was conducting an investigation into the matter.
He further claimed that the apartment complex on Lorens Road included three-bedroom units and security facilities, with the monthly market rental value exceeding Rs. 500,000.
Perera also alleged that eight full-time Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) activists had been assigned to maintain the official residence at Rajamalwatta, receiving salaries, privileges and vehicle facilities.
He urged the Speaker to appear before Parliament and provide an explanation regarding the allegations rather than avoiding the matter.
