The government led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake marks two years in power today (21), two years after his victory at the 2024 Presidential Election.
Dissanayake, the National People’s Power (NPP) candidate, won the Presidential Election held on 21 September 2024 and was subsequently sworn in as Sri Lanka’s ninth Executive President.
In the first count, Dissanayake secured 5,634,915 votes, or 42.31% of the valid votes, while Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) candidate Sajith Premadasa polled 4,363,035 votes, or 32.76%.
As no candidate secured more than 50% of the valid votes, preferences cast for eliminated candidates were counted. Following the preference count, Dissanayake’s total stood at 5,740,179 votes, while Premadasa’s total increased to 4,530,902.
The NPP subsequently secured 159 seats at the Parliamentary Election held in November 2024, giving the party a two-thirds majority in the 225-member Parliament.
To mark two years in office, the NPP has organised a series of public rallies across the country under the theme, “People’s Rule – Two Years Strong, Progress for All.”
The rallies, attended by President Dissanayake, have focused on the government’s account of its work during its first two years in office, development programmes and its future policy direction.
