A 54-year-old Angolan woman was arrested by the Sri Lanka Customs Narcotics Control Unit for allegedly attempting to smuggle cocaine into the country by concealing the narcotics inside her body.
The suspect arrived at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) on 17 July aboard Qatar Airways flight QR654, travelling from Angola via Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and Doha. She was reportedly using a wheelchair upon arrival.
According to Sri Lanka Customs, the woman voluntarily surrendered 14 capsules containing cocaine that had been concealed internally. She also told investigators that she had swallowed additional capsules containing the narcotic.
The recovered capsules contained 237 grams of cocaine, with an estimated street value of approximately Rs. 10 million, Customs said.
The suspect and the seized cocaine were handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) for further investigations, while steps were being taken to recover any remaining capsules believed to be concealed inside her body.
