The Principal of Buonavista College in Galle, who was arrested on suspicion of accepting a bribe of Rs. 250,000 to admit two children to the school, has been remanded until September 15.

The suspect was remanded after being produced before the Galle Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday (8), the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) said.

The principal had allegedly initially demanded Rs. 600,000—Rs. 300,000 for each child—but later reduced the amount to Rs. 300,000.

He had allegedly accepted an initial payment of Rs. 150,000 and admitted one of the children to Grade 1 for the 2026 academic year.

The principal had subsequently allegedly accepted another Rs. 50,000 to admit the second child to Grade 8.

He later allegedly demanded a further Rs. 250,000 to complete the admission procedures and threatened to remove both children from the school if the payment was not made.

CIABOC officers arrested the principal at a restaurant in Galle on Monday (7) while he was allegedly attempting to accept the Rs. 250,000 payment.
