The Cabinet has approved compensation for four more patients who lost their vision due to complications linked to the use of the liquid eye medication Prednisolone Acetate following eye surgeries carried out between March 3 and May 16, 2023.

Earlier, compensation had been granted to 17 patients at the Nuwara Eliya District General Hospital after investigations found they had lost their eyesight following eye surgeries at the hospital.

A specialist technical committee appointed to examine similar cases in other hospitals where the same medication had been used during the relevant period subsequently identified four additional patients who had also become blind and recommended that they be compensated.

Accordingly, the Cabinet approved a proposal submitted by Nalinda Jayatissa to award compensation of Rs. 1 million each to the four affected patients.
