Chief Inspector Varuni Bogahawatta, who served as the Officer-in-Charge of the Administration Division at the Kotawila Police Station, and four other suspects have been further remanded until November 20.

The order was issued by Matara Chief Magistrate Chathura Dissanayake, according to Ada Derana.

During the proceedings, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) informed the court that investigations would be completed and a report on their findings would be submitted on November 20.

Bogahawatta was arrested by the CID in connection with an investigation into the source of funds used to purchase a luxury motor vehicle and settle its leasing instalments.

The CID had previously taken the vehicle in her possession into custody as part of the investigation.

Investigations were launched after it emerged that the vehicle’s leasing instalments had allegedly been paid by an individual suspected of involvement in a financial fraud exceeding Rs. 1 billion at the Matara Cooperative Society.

The CID is investigating the source of the funds used to purchase the vehicle and make the leasing payments.
