The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has rejected a request seeking daily access for legal counsel to meet former State Intelligence Service Director Major General (Retd.) Suresh Sallay, who is currently receiving treatment at the National Hospital of Sri Lanka.

According to documents submitted to court, Sallay’s wife, Manori Sallay, had requested that attorney Asitha Siriwardena be permitted to meet her husband five days a week while he remains hospitalised.

Responding to the request, CID Director Shani Abeysekara informed court that the request had been declined.

The CID stated that Sallay was currently undergoing medical treatment and was not involved in any active investigative procedures that would necessitate daily consultations with his lawyer.

The department further argued that frequent meetings could interfere with the suspect’s recovery, noting that continuous consultations may deprive him of mental rest and negatively affect his mental wellbeing.

The CID also pointed out that an existing court order already permits Sallay’s lawyer to meet him once a week, on Wednesdays.
