Deshabandu Tennakoon Remanded Over ‘Aragalaya’ Attack

Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon, who was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), has been remanded until 27 August by the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court today (21).

CID officers arrested the former police chief at his residence yesterday (20) in connection with investigations into the violent attack on the ‘Aragalaya’ protest site at Galle Face Green on 9 May 2022.

Tennakoon, who was serving as Senior DIG in charge of the Western Province at the time of the incident, has been accused of failing to prevent the attack despite warnings and prior knowledge of possible violence.
