Parliament is set to debate a resolution today (5 August) seeking the removal of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon under Section 17 of the Removal of Officers (Procedure) Act, No. 5 of 2002.

The House is scheduled to convene at 9:30 a.m., with the debate on the resolution taking place from 11:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., according to the Office of the Secretary-General of Parliament.

A vote on the resolution is expected at 4:00 p.m., and all ruling party MPs have reportedly been instructed to be present for the division.

The resolution requires a simple majority—113 votes—for passage. If passed, the Speaker will announce the outcome in Parliament, following which the President is expected to nominate a new candidate for the post of IGP to the Constitutional Council.

On 22 July, a Committee of Inquiry appointed to investigate allegations of serious misconduct against the suspended IGP found Tennakoon guilty on all counts.

Speaker of Parliament Dr Jagath Wickramaratne later confirmed that he had received the full report of the Committee, which unanimously recommended Deshanabdu Tennakoon’s removal under Section 8(2) of the Act.
