Former Navy Commander Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne was granted bail by the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court today (22) over allegations that he aided and abetted a suspect to evade arrest in connection with the abduction and disappearance of 11 youths from Colombo and its suburbs in 2008.

Wijegunaratne appeared before court today in accordance with a summons previously issued and pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.

After considering the submissions, Colombo Fort Magistrate Pasan Amarasena ordered that Wijegunaratne be released on two surety bails of Rs. 1 million each.

The case was fixed for trial on December 9.

The charges against the former Navy Commander relate to allegations that he assisted a suspect to remain in hiding in connection with the case involving the abduction and enforced disappearance of 11 youths in 2008.
