Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasooriya announced that five organised crime figures including kehelbaddara Padme and Commando Salintha, were simultaneously arrested in Indonesia, marking the first time such an operation has been carried out in history.

Speaking at a press briefing organised by the Government Information Department this morning (28), the IGP revealed that all five suspects currently have Interpol Red Notices issued against them.

The arrests were made by the Indonesian police with the assistance of Interpol and in coordination with Sri Lanka Police.

Commenting further, Weerasooriya noted that organised crime in Sri Lanka has historically had links to politics. However, he stressed that the present environment has changed, with criminal figures no longer enjoying political protection.

He added that many organised crimes in Sri Lanka are often orchestrated from overseas, but the police now receive directions to take legal action against such individuals without political interference.

The IGP also disclosed that organised crime figures are spread across countries including Dubai, Oman, Russia, Belarus, and France, and assured that decisions regarding them will be made soon.

He extended special thanks to the Indonesian Embassy for its support in making the operation a success.
