The Colombo Magistrate’s Court yesterday (10) ordered that Ishara Sewwandi, a suspect arrested in connection with the killing of alleged underworld figure Ganemulla Sanjeewa, be remanded until 21 August.

Sewwandi, who had been held under a detention order following her arrest in Nepal, was produced before Colombo Additional Magistrate Liyan Warusawithana by the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD).

Police informed court that the detention order under which she had been held and questioned had expired and that she was therefore being produced before court.

The CCD also submitted a detailed report outlining the progress of its investigations and requested that the suspect be remanded.

After considering the submissions, the Additional Magistrate ordered that Sewwandi be remanded until 21 August and directed police to submit a further progress report on the investigation on that date.

Sewwandi was arrested in Nepal in October last year by a special Sri Lankan police team and subsequently brought back to Sri Lanka. She was thereafter detained in the custody of the CCD under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) for questioning.

She has been named as a suspect in the case over the killing of Ganemulla Sanjeewa, an alleged drug trafficker, who was shot dead inside Courtroom No. 5 of the Colombo Magistrate’s Court on 19 February 2025 while he was in the dock for a court proceeding.

Investigators allege that Sewwandi was involved in the conspiracy to kill Sanjeewa inside the courtroom.
