Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Namal Rajapaksa has claimed that the government may attempt to imprison him before the party’s public rally in Anuradhapura on September 12 if it anticipates a large turnout.

Speaking to the media at the SLPP headquarters on Nelum Mawatha, Rajapaksa said his party did not believe in gaining political power through violence and unrest.

“We are not engaged in politics that seeks power through riots, killings, arson and the loss of lives. That is the JVP’s method. The JVP came to power that way—in 1988–89 and again in 2022,” he alleged.

Rajapaksa also accused the government of carrying out widespread political repression.

“If the government realises that a massive crowd will gather in Anuradhapura on September 12, it may even put Namal Rajapaksa behind bars before then. The President is now travelling from village to village, so the difference is clear,” he said.
