The Government is unable to meet the financial demands made by Sri Lankan sprint champion Yupun Abeykoon, Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage said, following the athlete’s decision to withdraw from representing Sri Lanka.
Speaking to the media, the Minister described Abeykoon as an outstanding athlete who had brought international recognition to Sri Lanka through his achievements.
He said several discussions had been held with Abeykoon over the past few months, both at the Ministry of Sports and in Parliament, in an effort to resolve the issue.
However, Gamage said Abeykoon’s financial request falls outside the funding policy and framework under which the Ministry is able to provide assistance to athletes.
According to the Minister, Abeykoon had requested that the Government honour an alleged verbal commitment of US$300,000 made by former Sports Minister Harin Fernando. However, he said the Ministry was not in a position to make such a payment based on a verbal commitment made by a former minister.
Gamage explained that financial assistance to athletes is provided through the “Mission Olympic” programme, based on their current performances and rankings.
He stressed that public funds could not be allocated solely on the basis of a verbal promise made by a former minister.
However, the Minister said the Government would welcome Abeykoon if he decides to represent Sri Lanka again and remains prepared to provide him with the maximum possible support within the existing policy framework.
