Police today (29) foiled the alleged abduction of a young woman who had attended a graduation ceremony at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) in Colombo, with investigations identifying her boyfriend as the suspect.
Narahenpita Police received information at around 1.30 p.m. that a young woman was being abducted in a car.
Police officers responding to the information attempted to stop a car travelling from Narahenpita towards Nawala, but the driver allegedly ignored police orders and continued driving.
Police again signalled the vehicle to stop on the Narahenpita–Nawala Road. When the driver allegedly failed to comply, officers opened fire at the vehicle.
The driver subsequently abandoned the car and fled. Police officers who searched the vehicle found the young woman inside and identified her as the woman allegedly abducted from the BMICH.
Subsequent investigations revealed that the vehicle had allegedly been driven by her boyfriend. Both are residents of the Weligama and Midigama areas in Matara.
The woman had arrived at the BMICH with family members to attend the graduation ceremony of the Sri Palee Campus of the University of Colombo.
According to information received by Police, she had attended the ceremony without informing her boyfriend, while her father had alerted Police about the alleged abduction.
The vehicle used in the incident was taken to the Cinnamon Gardens Police Station, while the woman was produced before the Colombo Judicial Medical Officer this afternoon.
Investigations have further revealed that the vehicle belonged to the suspect and had reportedly been driven to the graduation ceremony by the woman’s father.
Police said investigations had also revealed that the suspect had previously faced allegations related to drug use and trafficking.
Operations are underway to arrest the suspect, who remains at large.
Further investigations are being conducted under the supervision of Colombo Range DIG Nishantha Zoysa and a team including Colombo South Division SSP Lucien Suriyabandara.
