Singer Iraj Weeraratne and four others have filed another petition before the Supreme Court challenging the Government-gazetted 22nd Amendment to the Constitution Bill.

The petition was filed by Weeraratne, Chamara Wijesuriya, Nandana Kuda Meegoda, Nilantha Sathsara Gamage and Milinda Rajapaksha.

The petitioners claimed that provisions of the proposed Bill would undermine judicial independence and violate freedom of expression.

Accordingly, they requested the Supreme Court to determine that the Bill must be approved by the people at a referendum.
