New Political Party To Shelter Common Candidate

A new political party has been formed in Sri Lanka under the name 'United Lanka Freedom Party' targeting forthcoming national level elections.

It is reported that several senior members of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) who are disappointed with the present state of affairs in the country are behind the formation of the new political party.

It is in the grapevine that the party has been formed as an alternative option for the "common candidate". If the UNP fields its own candidate at the next Presidential Election, the new party would act as a political front for the "common candidate".

The United National Party has already stated that it would UNP National Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe as the party's presidential candidate at the next election. The other political parties of the opposition are still exploring the possibility of fielding a common candidate.

However, the new party is yet to seek registration under the Department of Elections. The party will be permitted to contest elections when it is registered under the Department of Election.
