Premalal Jayasekera Escorted To Parliament To Attend Today's Sessions

September 08, 2020

Premalal Jayasekera, who was sentenced to death over a murder in 2015, was escorted to Parliament to attend today's Parliamentary session, a short while ago.

Jayasekera's presence in Parliament has sparked a major controversy in the political sphere.

The Court of Appeal yesterday issued an interim order informing the Prisons Deparment to allow Jayasekera to attend Parliamentary sittings.

Jayasekera filed a writ application with the Court of Appeal last week, seeking permission to attend parliamentary sittings.

Jayasekera was convicted for a murder in the Kahawatte area and given death sentence just days before the last Parliamentary election.

However, Jayasekera was able to get elected to Parliament with over 100000 votes from the Ratnapura district.

The Attorney General, in his observations, made it clear that Jayaskera could not be sworn in as an MP due to the conviction.
