AG Report Observes Kurunegala MC Has Spent Rs. 7 Million As Legal Fees For Cases Against Demolition Of Archeological Site

An Auditor General's report has revealed that the Kurunegala Municipal Council has spent Rs. 7 million as legal fees for sourt cases relating to the demolition of an archeological site belonging to King Buwanekabahu's era.

The Auditor General's report observes that the staggering legal fees have finanancially burdened the Local Government (LG) body.

In addition to the LG fees, the LG body also bears expenses for seceurity and maintenance of the site.

Kurunegala Mayor Thushara Sanjeewa has come under severe fire over the demolition of the archeological site on the premise that it was an "unauthoritised construction".

Several police complaints were also lodged against the Mayor in this regard.

The Kurunagala MC last year passed a resolution to cover the legal expenses incurred in the case against Mayor Thushara Sanjeewa for allegedly demolishing the archaeological site.
