Will Ranjan Lose MP Seat On April 12? Fresh Questions Over Ranjan's Status As MP Due To Failure To Attend Parliament In 03 Months

Questions have arisen over MP Ranjan Ramanayake's MP seat again with some experts claiming that Ramanayake will automatically lose his MP seat on April 12 as he has not attended Parliament in three months.

Ramanayake was convicted for contempt of court in January and has not attended Parliament ever since.

Although the opposition has requested Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena to allow Ramanayake to attend Parliament while in prison, the Speaker has stated that he will wait until he receives a court ruling on the matter.

Meanwhile, Chief Opposition Whip Lakshman Kiriella is expected to present a motion in the House today seeking three-month leave for the imprisoned Parliamentarian.

According to Parliament, if a Parliamentarian cannot attend parliamentary sessions for more than three month without leave, the member is bound to lose his or her MP seat.

Former MP Ajith Mannapperuma is likely to enter Parliament and take oaths as an MP if Ramanayake loses his seat in Parliament.
