Vendaruwe Upali Thera Makes Another Controversial Statement: "To Rebuild Sri Lanka President Must Resort To Stern Action"

Making a controversial statement, Wedaruwe Upali Thero, Anunayake of the Asgiriya Chapter said the President would have to make tough decisions for the betterment of the country despite criticism about "dictatorship".

Speaking to the media in Kandy, the monk said that the unlimited freedom given to many had become an obstacle to rebuilding the country.

"I think that unlimited freedom is an obstacle to the development of a country. Therefore, one law must be enforced, especially if it is for the betterment of the country. When we talk about our righteous rule, it also includes directness."

"if this country is to be rebuilt within two years, the President will have to take tough decisions where necessary, for the good of the country, without harassing others. Therefore, we expect the President to resort to stern action in order to make this country a better place," he added.

The same monk stated during the last Presidential election that Gotabhaya Rajapaksa should become a "Hitler" to rebuild Sri Lanka. This statement drew severe criticism from many quarters.
