Several Party Leaders Refrain From Attending PM's Meeting To Discuss Current Issues Faced By Government

A meeting convened by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday to discuss solutions to the current issues faced by the government ended inconclusively, informed political sources said.

Several party leaders representing the government namely Wimal Weerawansa, Udaya Gammanpila, Vasudewa Nanayakkara, Tissa Vitarana, ALM Athaulla, Athuraliye Rathana Thera and several others did not take part in the meeting.

They did not take part in the meeting on the basis that a number of SLPP MPs were also invited for the meeting. However, it is learnt that some of them held a separate meeting with the Prime Minister at Temple Trees to explain their position.

A number of matters, including the current differences of opinion over the electoral system pertaining to the Provincial Council election, were expected to be discussed at the meeting.

The Prime Minister has also decided to convene another party leaders meeting on May 11 to discuss the issues further.
