Govt. Limits Free Provision Of Food Items To Low Income Families During Lockdown Period: Decision Sparks Controversy

The Cabinet has decided to provide Rs. 10,000 worth of dry food items only to low income families.

Earlier, the package was provided to everyone undergoing quarantine, irrespective of their income levels.

The Presidential Task Force on Economic Revival and Poverty Alleviation has issued a special circular to all District Secretaries and Divisional Secretaries announcing this.

Informed sources said the decision was made considering the economic hardships faced by the government due to the ongoing lockdowns.

The opposition, however, has criticised the government for limiting the provision of food items to low income families.

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said the move was aimed at takig "revenge" from the public.
