Prof. Channa Jayasumana, Minister of State for Pharmaceuticals, Supply and Regulation said that the COVID19 Delta subtype found in Sri Lanka is common among school children and the youth.

This subtype was recently discovered by a team of researchers at the Medical Faculty of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura.

Meanwhile, those who have been fully vaccinated have a higher chance of transmitting the disease to others, he said, adding that although they have contracted the virus again, the complications are less. The government, however, has proceeded to reopen schools after a prolonged closure. Political parties too continue to conduct public events with large crowds.
