UN welcomes lifting of State of Emergency in Sri Lanka

The United Nations welcomes the lifting of the State of Emergency in Sri Lanka.

UN Resident Coordinator in Sri Lanka Hanaa Singer – Hamdy tweeted,

"TheUN stands by the rule of law and the right to peaceful assembly and welcomes the lifting of the State of Emergency in Sri Lanka. We encourage parties to work towards a peaceful resolution to the crisis that will allow for the country to focus on the urgest steps needed for economic recovery,” Hamdy said.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa declared a State of Emergency on 1 April. The Gazette notification was reversed from midnight on 5 April.
