SLPP Still Indecisive On 21A: Basil Says He Is Unaware Of Party’s Stance On Constitutional Amendment

The SLPP is yet to make a decision on supporting the 21st Amendment to the Constitution, informed source said.

A group of backbenchers from the party, including General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam have taken a strong stand against the 21st Amendment to the Constitution.

They maintain that the 20th Amendment was introduced due to the instability created by the 19th Amendment to the Constitution.

They have already opposed the provision which disqualifies dual citizens from serving as MPs.

However, a group of MPs within the party support the proposed 21st amendment to the Constitution.

When asked about the matter, former Minister Basil Rajapaksa said he was unaware of the party’s position on the 21st Amendment.

“You must ask that question from MPs. I don’t know what they are going to do about it.” Rajapaksa said.
