November 17, 2022

Cricketer Danushka Gunathilaka has been granted bail on sexual assault charges after a court heard he had the support of the Sri Lankan cricket association and government, and sureties totalling $200,000 were accepted.

The 31-year-old was arrested on November 6 at his team’s hotel in Sydney’s CBD before they flew home following their Twenty20 World Cup loss to England.

He has been charged with four counts of sexual intercourse without consent after allegedly sexually assaulting a 29-year-old woman in the eastern suburbs of Sydney on November 2, days after they matched on Tinder.

Bail has been granted on strict conditions, including a nightly curfew and a direction to immediately surrender his passport. He will be restricted to a single phone. He was also banned from travelling within 1km of an international departure point or having any contact with the alleged victim. He will reside in northwest Sydney.

He was also banned from using Tinder and his social media accounts after being granted bail while awaiting trial on rape charges. Bail was granted with a $150,000 surety and various conditions, including Gunathilaka not using Tinder or any other dating apps. He’s also prevented from accessing his existing social media accounts unless in the company of his legal team. Gunathilaka will be required to live at a specific address and report to police daily.

The case is scheduled to return to court on 12 January.
