Sri Lanka-style Protests Break Out In Brazil's Capital As Protestors Storm Several Key Government Buildings

Thousands of supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro who refuse to accept his electoral defeat stormed Congress, the Supreme Court, and the presidential palace in the capital on Sunday.

The protestors bypassed security barricades, climbed on the roofs, broke windows, and invaded all three buildings, which are connected through the vast Three Powers square in Brasilia. Some are calling for a military intervention to restore the far-right Bolsonaro to power.

The wave of protests followed the inauguration of Brazil's Leftist President Lula Da Silva who won the country's presidential election with a narrow margin.

A number of world leaders including US President Joe Biden have condemned the attack on Brazil's democratic institutions.

The protests drew strong parallels with the scenes that unfolded in Sri Lanka on July 09, 2022, when hundreds of thousands of protestors stormed some key government buildings calling for the resignation of Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.

They occupied government buildings such as the President's House, the Presidential Secretariat, the Prime Minister's Office, the Prime Minister's official residence for several days.
