SLPP And UNP Hold Talks To Form Alliance For Upcoming LG Polls: SLPPers To Contest Under 'Elephant' In Some Areas

The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna and the United National Party have held a discussion in Colombo about the possibility of forming a common front for the upcoming LG elections.

They have reportedly discussed the possibility of contesting in some LG areas under the 'Elephant' symbol and some LG areas under the 'Pohottuwa' symbol.

However, no final agreements have been reached at this meeting as the possibility of holding the LG election in March still hangs in the balance.

Sources close to the government said President Ranil Wickremesinghe and a section of his government are in favour of postponing the election citing "financial constraints".

Former Minister Basil Rajapaksa, SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam, Sanjeewa Edirimanna, Johnston Fernando, and Mahindananda Aluthgamage have attended these discussions representing the SLPP while Vjira Abeywardena, Sagala Ratnayaka, Palitha Range Bandara and Ravi Karunanayake have represented the UNP.
