Veteran Actor G.R. Perera Passes Away After Prolonged Illness

G.R. Perera, a veteran actor in Sri Lankan cinema, theatre, and television, has passed away at the age of 83. Born on November 13, 1939, as Galhenage Rathnapala Perera, he had a career spanning over five decades and acted in more than 600 television serials.

Perera began his film career with a minor role in the 1971 film ‘Welikathara’ directed by D.B. Nihalsinghe. He first appeared in a major role in his second film ‘Kalu Diya Dahara’ directed by Manik Sandarasagara. His first television acting role was in the serial ‘Thunkal Sihinaya’ directed by Tissa Abeysekara. His role as “Malakada Bass” in the serial ‘Doo Daruwo’ was a turning point in his teledrama career.

Perera also acted in six foreign films, including three Indian, two American, and one German film. He won a critics award for his role in the movie ‘Karumakkarayo’ in 1980 and the Best Supporting Actor award for his role in the teleplay ‘Chakrayudaya’ in 2007. He also won an award for acting in the most number of teledramas at Raigam Tele’es.

Perera had been ill for a long time and passed away at his home. The arrangements for his final rites will be announced later by his family.
