Retired High Court Judge Lalith Ekanayake Takes the Helm as Chairman of the National Police Commission

President Ranil Wickremesinghe has appointed retired High Court Judge Lalith Ekanayake as the new chairman of the National Police Commission.

This decision comes with the approval of the Constitutional Council, marking an important step toward bolstering the independence and effectiveness of Sri Lanka's law enforcement agencies.

The National Police Commission, which was reestablished as an independent commission under the 21st Amendment to the Constitution, serves as a crucial body responsible for overseeing and regulating the country's police force.

Its primary mandate includes ensuring that the police operate within the confines of the law, promoting transparency and accountability, and safeguarding the rights and welfare of both the officers and the public they serve.
