Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Alleges Violation of Parliamentary Privileges, Calls for Committee Investigation

Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera has lodged a complaint with the Speaker, alleging a breach of his parliamentary privileges.

The complaint pertains to a newspaper report published in the Aruna newspaper, which was subsequently aired on the Derana TV station, implicating him in a controversial statement made by SJB MP Chaminda Wijesiri during a parliamentary session.

Minister Wijesekera expressed his concerns to the Speaker, asserting that the report in question infringed upon his rights and immunities as a member of Parliament. He highlighted that the published article, coupled with its broadcast on a popular television program, has the potential to damage his reputation and hinder the smooth functioning of his official duties.

To address this matter, Wijesekera has formally requested the Speaker to convene the privileges committee in Parliament. The committee, responsible for examining parliamentary privileges, will be tasked with summoning all parties involved to gather evidence and conduct a thorough investigation. The parties to be summoned include the Aruna newspaper, Derana TV station, and SJB MP Chaminda Wijesiri.
