Sabry Explains Why He Slammed Canada: Recalls Canadian PM's Statement on "Tamil Genocide Day"

September 27, 2023

Foreign Minister Ali Sabry  issued a statement explaining his critical remarks about Canada, emphasizing that his comments were rooted in Sri Lanka's history of enduring atrocities and defeating terrorism.

The Foreign Minister, along with this statement on the Social Media platform X, also shared a speech made by the Canadian Prime Minister on the "Tamil Genocide Day" which sparked a tension between Sri Lanka and Canada earlier this year.

In his statement, Minister Sabry acknowledged the painful history of Sri Lanka's struggle against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), a separatist militant organization that was responsible for numerous acts of violence and terror. He highlighted that Sri Lanka had successfully defeated terrorism and worked towards restoring peace in the nation.

The Foreign Minister expressed his frustration over what he considered an unfair accusation of genocide against Sri Lanka in the recent past. This accusation had drawn widespread attention and scrutiny, prompting Minister Sabry to voice his concerns.

Minister Sabry's remarks are in line with the sentiments of many Sri Lankans who believe that the nation's efforts to overcome terrorism and restore stability have been unfairly tarnished by certain international allegations.

He also called upon Sri Lankans to remember and honor the memory of the heroes who sacrificed their lives in the struggle for freedom and peace. Minister Sabry reminded the public not to take for granted the hard-won peace and stability that the nation currently enjoys.
